Natures Valley

This picturesque area is frequently used for Landscape and Nature photography excursions early in the year.

The area provides ample photographic opportunities, with beaches and rocky coast, lagoon and river, and magnificent indigenous forests.

Apart from the photographic and educational opportunity, these excursions provide an ideal setting for groups to bond, as they share in the relaxed atmosphere and socialize around the braai fire in the evenings. At the same time, they are woken before sunrise and often do night photographic exercises as well.

Community support projects are regularly carried out when opportunities are identified to provide assistance by means of photography: A good example was when abnormally high winds and storms devastated sections of this community. The students were taken in to document the devastation and the courageous community response to the situation. A photographic exhibition of the work was mounted at Walmer Park, and trolleys were placed outside the Pick ‘n Pay supermarket for donations of supplies. The response from the public was remarkable, with very substantial amounts of supplies being provided to the Missionvale community, thanks to the powerful images exhibited by the students.

Cockscomb Mountain

At 1759m, the Cockscomb is the highest mountain in this part of the Eastern Cape. Student groups are occasionally taken on “adventure documentary” photographic projects to this area. The strong and healthy students undertake the grueling climb, accompanied by a lecturer and a knowledgeable local guide, while the remainder explore and photograph the beautiful landscape and nature around the farm in the foothills.

On one occasion almost the entire 2nd year class attempted the climb, with the majority successfully reaching the top to share a bottle of bubbly with the lecturer on his birthday – a memorable occasion for all concerned, and testimony to the spirit of both students and staff!
